TIme Is A River

Story Behind the Song

A contemplation of the passage of time; not a new idea, really...but then it's only the old ideas that tend to make good songs, anyway.

This song was inspired by two experiences: looking back through my high school annuals, and drifting down the Hiwassee River in Tennessee on an inner tube (on purpose, for recreation). Obviously I didn't do both at once.

I've done more than one rewrite on the song.  I like to ask pro songwriters "when is a song finished?"  Some say after the demo is done, some say after the album cut is done and it is on the radio...and some don't ever think a song is necessarily finished!  I performed a version at my 20th high school reunion.  (See the reunion webpage for the full retrospective experience: www.bradleycentral82.com).

In July 2004 I monkeyed around with it some more and rewrote it to the version you can read here.   Since I had finally told Beverly out about my crush on her (at the reunion--ah, well, better late than never) I figured it was safe to put her name in the song for all the world to hear.
